Germans forced by us (103rd Infantry Division) to give holocaust victims decent burial. Oh, the absolute horror of it!
Combat Veterans
Combat veterans fought hard to survive.
Each life for us was a precious gem.
Precious the lives of those at our side,
who would die for us, and us for them.
Precious the lives of those we set free,
horror camp victims, subhuman to
the Nazis, dank dregs of humanity,
skeletal skin and bones, so many corpses too.
Our enemies' lives, to most of us,
were precious as well, and with no glee,
satisfaction, pleasure or plus
we killed or maimed of necessity.
Yet no conclusive, full awareness,
conception and appreciation
of "precious" did our lives afford us
until, defenders of our beloved nation,
victorious survivors, alive, we had
wives and indescribably
precious souls like you to call us Dad,
enriching us so immeasurably.
We would have died for an abstraction—
my country, liberty, justice, space
for more advancement, growth and action
set to a fast forward, upward pace.
Abstractions, yes, but built, concretized
and actualized on bedrock blocks of
determination, characterized
by resourcefulness and firm resolve.
