Heaven's Leaven
Leaven the lump,* oh Lord, we pray—
Leaven without measure given,
For our sins to be forgiven,
Death's forays ever to forestay.
Bread of life
—leavening lumps from above,
As the Redeemer's words us tell;
Lumps swell in throats and hearts as well,
Our souls suffused with his transcendental love.
Heaven's leaven uplifts our earthbound souls,
Settles down their hung-up longings,
Lightens burdens and brightens goals,
Heightens our sense of belonging.
Heaven's leaven to us a given,
Given God's compassion and love,
Descending upon us from above,
Lifting us upward toward heaven.
To what the Kingdom of Heaven compare?
To a mustard seed, the Lord us taught.
The smallest of seeds, as a bush small it is not,
And to it flock flocks of birds of the air.
Saints of old all arrayed in white,
Leavened from heaven from heads to toes.
Saints clad now in anything goes;
All with an aurous glow alight.
May we knead the lumps we get
To just the needed shapes and textures
Scripted by God in the Holy Scriptures,
Our hearts on this forever set.
As for those other lumps we get,
Bumps on the head, lumps in the throat,
The largest of all awaits us, back at last,
To our home in Heaven, our dearest hope!
Lift up our contrite hearts to thee,
Willing us to do
thy
will first,
For fortitude and virtue thirst,
Uplifted and uplifting be.
Matthew 13:33
*Leavened dough with which to make a pastry. A lump already leavened (raised by yeast) can raise other lumps. Those who accept the gospel (the good tidings of great joy) and live by it can leaven others' lives through their example, their actions and words. What could be more golden? That's why this is framed and expressed in gold.
